Alexandre Desplat’s score to The Twilight Saga – New Moon is being eagerly awaited by film music fans. The second film based on the books by Stephanie Meyer is released in UK cinemas on Nov 20th and the film’s artist soundtrack is stationed at number one this week on the soundtrack chart. Silva Screen have re-recorded Desplat’s beautiful piece The Meadow from the film and you can listen to it now on the Silva Masters website

Congratulations to two-time Oscar nominee Alexandre Desplat who was chosen as Film Composer Of The Year and winner of Best Original Film Score Of The Year (The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button) at the 36th Ghent International Film Festival. Silva Screen have released two of his excellent soundtracks, The Luzhin Defence and Birth.

Vic Mizzy 1916-2009

Vic Mizzy, composer of one of TV’s greatest themes, The Addams Family, has died in Los Angeles. His harpsichord driven music for the 1964-1966 TV series revolving around the spooky inhabitants of 0001 Cemetery Lane has one of the great TV rhyming lyrics, “They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re altogether ooky, the Addams family”. With it’s finger snapping accompaniment from the cast it provided much wealth for its author who once said, “That’s why I’m living in Bel-Air, two finger snaps and you live in Bel-Air”.

Chart Entry – 44 Years On

Dr. Who & The Daleks made it’s cinema debut in 1965 and 44 years later Malcolm Lockyer’s music has made the charts. Showing at number 25 this week on the OCC Soundtrack Chart, this first ever release for the film’s score is proving to be a cult hit. Fans of the films worldwide (Bill McGuffie’s score for Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150A.D. is also included) have expressed their delight that this music has been made available at last. It’s been worth the wait!

Red Riding to be remade in the US…

Columbia Pictures has acquired rights to remake the U.K. miniseries “Red Riding” and is negotiating with Steve Zaillian to write the script and Ridley Scott to direct.

Omid Djalili’s new DVD release in November to feature Silva Screen’s recording of “Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001: A Space Odyssey)” in the opening credits.

Cherry picked from Silva Screen’s highly acclaimed Stanley Kubrick tribute compilation, this exciting track is performed by The Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. The 2001: Music From The Films Of Stanley Kubrick album was lauded by Mojo as an “exercise in polished style” while Empire Magazine concludes it to be “challenging, powerful and totally unique”.
Described by The Times as a “Cult favourite” and by The Independent as “hilarious and painfully funny” Omid Djalili is an award-winning British-Iranian actor and comedian. Not only acclaimed as one of Britain’s funniest stand up comedians, Djalili has also featured in big budget Hollywood flicks including The Mummy, Gladiator, Spy Game and Pirates of The Caribbean III.

Marvin Hamlisch gives interview to Variety Magazine in anticipation of receiving the World Soundtrack Lifetime Achievement Award at the 36th Ghent International Film Festival later this month.

The Magazine held an interview with the legendary composer about the difficulties of writing for the Soderbergh film. Hamlisch says of The Informant! score it “did not work in a conventional manner, where one tries to be supportive of the scene…. the music became another character in the film, the inner voice of a bipolar person”.

The Informant! is released on 26th October.

Exodus In Soon

The Tadlow Records release of Ernest Gold’s complete score for Exodus will be available to buy here shortly. The 2CD set features over 90 minutes worth of the Oscar winning music written for the film of which just an hour was used originally. The release also features other selections from Gold scores and extensive liner notes.
