LONDON MUSIC WORKS PERFORMS THE FILM & TV THEME EXTRAVAGANZA LIVE AT ISLINGTON ASSEMBLY HALL – JULY 9th
Concert performances of film music tend to be strait-jacketed in the mould of tributes to composers (John Williams, John Barry), epic scores to films such as Gladiator and Titanic or tributes to Disney and film versions of Broadway musicals. The Film & TV Theme Extravaganza taking place at Islington Assembly Hall, London on July 9 is determined to change that perception. The cream of the capital’s session players who record under the name London Music Works will be stepping out of their studio confines to deliver a musical detonation of sound, with a programme that covers themes rarely heard played in a live environment.
It’s a chance to hear some true gems of screen music performed with the flourish and zest that comes from accomplished musicianship. With intricate themes like John Barry’s Beat Girl, Lalo Schifrin’s Bullitt and Roy Budd’s Get Carter on the musical menu, the players have set the bar high for the night.
However, that’s not all. As noted, live performances of film music stick very much to the mainstream and in the case of TV themes are almost totally ignored. For music that has become the fabric of everybody’s lives over the last 60 years that’s a major omission and that will also be remedied on July 9th. Expect a tingle in the spine when the band launch into Laurie Johnson’s The Avengers (the epitome of 60s TV themes), Harry South’s explosive Sweeney theme and the super-cool, jazz based and much loved Hanna Barbera themes The Flintstones and The Jetsons.
