The film, which tells the true story of the relationship between Welsh schoolmaster Philip Burton and a wild young schoolboy called Richard Jenkins, later to become the world-famous actor Richard Burton, features a strong and lyrical original score by Welsh composer JOHN HARDY and is performed by the BBC NATIONAL ORCHESTRA OF WALES.

The story, directed by MARC EVANS, details the early life of Richard Jenkins (HARRY LAWTEY). He dreamed of becoming an actor, but his ambitions were in danger of being derailed by a combination of family trouble, the pressure of war, and his own lack of discipline. Mr. Burton (TOBY JONES) recognized the raw talent in his pupil, and made it his mission to fight for him, becoming his tutor, strict taskmaster and eventually his adoptive father. Actor Burton would go on to be nominated for seven Oscars.

Biography

John Hardy is an international composer and collaborator, always working to create art, including film, opera and theatre, in Wales and worldwide. His work is characterised by a directness of communication, a focus on totality of experience, and a valuing and nurturing of creativity in others. ‘Utterly engrossing’ (The Guardian); ‘hauntingly atmospheric’ (The Observer); ‘energetic, instinctive’ (The Times); ‘unique’ (The Guardian); ‘witty’ (The Independent); ‘gripping and intensely theatrical’ (Opera Now).

Other innovative collaborations include The Hunchback in the Park for Aardman Animation and BBC Online, scored for BBC National Orchestra Of Wales; On Bear Ridge, The Persians, Coriolan/us, and Iliad for National Theatre Wales; Steel Country, a USA-based contemporary film drama shot in Atlanta, Georgia and starring Irish actor Andrew Scott; and multiple seasons of TV dramas, A Mind To Kill / Heliwrl, Hidden / Craith, The Light In The Hall / Y Golau, and Bregus [Fragile].
